About VEGALYSIS: what it is and what it is not
VEGALYSIS is an educational reference tool for people on a plant-based diet who want to make sense of their own lab results. It compares the values you enter against ranges drawn from open scientific publications and clinical reviews, shows how markers interact, and produces a list of things worth thinking about and discussing with a professional.
The project is deliberately built on a transparent method rather than on an authority's name: every range and every rule carries a link to its source, and the algorithm itself is deterministic and documented on the methodology page. You can check any conclusion against the original research.
What the tool does
- Takes blood-test values — entered manually or recognised from an uploaded report (PDF or photo).
- Normalises units to a single canonical form, including the Cyrillic spellings used by Russian labs.
- Compares each value against the range considered favourable in the plant-based literature — often tighter than a lab's statistical reference interval.
- Surfaces interconnections: which markers distort one another, and why a "normal" result does not always mean all is well.
- Builds a summary and a list of topics to raise with a professional, and points out which basic tests are missing from the panel.
What the tool is NOT

Why plant-based specifically
A plant-based diet has its own predictable arithmetic of deficiencies: B12 is absent from plant foods, non-haem iron absorbs less readily, EPA/DHA depend on ALA conversion, and iodine, zinc, selenium and vitamin D rely on a narrow set of sources.
Generic calculators miss this: they compare a value against the average lab reference and cannot see that on a plant-based diet "bottom of the range" and "sufficient" are not the same thing.
Where the ranges come from

Our contribution is elsewhere: gathering the sources, turning them carefully into a reproducible algorithm, and showing the user all of its inner workings.

Limits of applicability
The tool works only with the data you enter and knows nothing of your wider clinical picture. This is not a formality — these are the method's real limits:
- symptoms, examination, history, medication and chronic disease are not taken into account;
- rare conditions and atypical combinations of values are outside the algorithm's coverage;
- recognition of an uploaded report can misread values and units — always check the result against the original;
- some unit conversions are inherently ambiguous; there the tool does not guess but flags the value for checking;
- the tool is not for emergencies: with severe or worsening symptoms, seek medical help rather than spending time on lab interpretation.
