Thyroid & iodine
Urinary iodine (UIC) — optimal range for vegans & vegetarians
Urinary iodine concentration — an indicator of intake.
Optimal range
150–300 µg/L
How a value is read
| Deficient | < 100 µg/L |
| Below optimal | 100 – 150 µg/L |
| Optimal | 150 – 300 µg/L |
| Above optimal | 300 – 500 µg/L |
| Markedly high | > 500 µg/L |
Bands are given in the marker's canonical unit; values in other units are converted automatically.
Why it matters on a plant-based diet
The only direct marker of iodine intake (~90% is excreted in urine). Often low in vegans without iodized salt or sea vegetables. Optimal ~100–200 µg/L; both deficiency and excess harm the thyroid.
A single marker decides nothing
Deficiencies mask one another: high folate hides low B12, inflammation inflates ferritin, low zinc mimics iron deficiency. VEGALYSIS reads the whole picture and explains the links.
