Vitamin B12

Homocysteine — optimal range for vegans & vegetarians

An amino acid whose metabolism depends on B12, folate and B6.

Optimal range

≤ 10 µmol/L

How a value is read

Optimal≤ 10 µmol/L
Above optimal10 – 15 µmol/L
Markedly high> 15 µmol/L

Bands are given in the marker's canonical unit; values in other units are converted automatically.

Why it matters on a plant-based diet

Rises with deficiency of B12, folate or B6. In vegans it most often reflects B12 (folate is usually plentiful). Elevated levels are a vascular risk factor.

A single marker decides nothing

Deficiencies mask one another: high folate hides low B12, inflammation inflates ferritin, low zinc mimics iron deficiency. VEGALYSIS reads the whole picture and explains the links.
