Vitamin B12

Methylmalonic acid (MMA) — optimal range for vegans & vegetarians

A metabolite that accumulates when B12 is insufficient.

Optimal range

≤ 0.27 µmol/L

How a value is read

Optimal≤ 0.271 µmol/L
Above optimal0.271 – 0.4 µmol/L
Markedly high> 0.4 µmol/L

Bands are given in the marker's canonical unit; values in other units are converted automatically.

Why it matters on a plant-based diet

A cellular marker: rises with functional B12 deficiency before serum B12 falls. Unaffected by folate, so more reliable than homocysteine in vegans.

A single marker decides nothing

Deficiencies mask one another: high folate hides low B12, inflammation inflates ferritin, low zinc mimics iron deficiency. VEGALYSIS reads the whole picture and explains the links.
